Why Tuition Kept Rising into 2026

1
Faculty salaries are the main driver

Private school teachers haven't been exempt from the broader tightening in the professional labor market. Schools competing for candidates who could earn more at tech companies or in public districts — particularly in California — have had to raise compensation consistently. At most independent schools, salaries represent 65–75% of the operating budget. When that number goes up 4–5% annually, tuition follows.

2
Deferred capital projects came due

Many schools deferred facilities projects during 2020–2022. Those renovations — science labs, performing arts spaces, security upgrades — are now moving forward with 2025–2026 construction budgets that reflect higher materials and labor costs. Schools financing these projects over 10–15 years are baking that debt service into tuition.

3
Demand hasn't softened — especially in California

Private K–12 enrollment nationally has held steady or grown modestly since 2022. In California, increased concern about public school safety and academic quality in specific districts has maintained waitlists at many schools. When applicants outnumber available spots, schools don't need to compete on price.
