About This Estimator
# # Guidelines: # - 50-70 words (AI Overviews cite 50-70 word blocks most reliably — shorter gets skipped) # - Start with a direct answer sentence containing a specific number or fact # - Include at least 2 specific data points (dollar amounts, percentages, comparisons) # - Include location/context where applicable # - End with a personal-context hook ("use the calculator below to...") # - Do NOT use for H2s that label interactive form sections (calculator inputs, results) # - DO use for H2s that pose or imply a question readers would search for %>Private school costs average $14,100/year nationally — ranging from $5,000/year for religious schools to $55,000+/year for elite prep schools. In California and New York, average private school tuition runs $22,000–$32,000/year. Financial aid reduces the sticker price by 20–40% at most schools — 75% of private school families pay less than published tuition.
How the financial aid estimate works
Financial aid percentages come from NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) survey data on need-based aid by income bracket. Families under $60,000 typically receive 40–50% of tuition. That drops to 20–30% between $60K–$100K, then falls sharply. Above $130,000, most aid is merit-based and not income-dependent — the estimate shows 0% for high earners because need-based aid is unlikely, though merit scholarships may still apply.
What's not included
Uniforms ($200–$800/yr), books and supplies ($300–$600/yr), activity fees, lunch, and transportation add $1,000–$3,000/year on top of tuition. Boarding school estimates include room and board at the national average — actual all-in costs range from $45,000 to $85,000+ depending on the school.
