How to Apply for Ohio's Program

Program: EdChoice Expansion Scholarship

Deadline: Annual application; check Ohio DOE for dates

Ohio's EdChoice Expansion is income-based at 450% of the federal poverty level. Benefit amounts are tiered: families at the lower end of the income scale receive more. There is also the original EdChoice program (for students at low-performing schools) and the Jon Peterson Special Needs Scholarship for students with disabilities. Apply through the Ohio Department of Education's scholarship portal.

1

Confirm your school is approved

Private schools must be accredited and registered with the state program to accept voucher or ESA students. Contact the school directly or check the program's approved school list.

2

Gather documents

Typically: child's birth certificate, proof of state residency, income documentation (recent tax return or pay stubs), and current school enrollment records.

3

Apply before the window closes

Annual application; check Ohio DOE for dates. Programs with fixed windows often have waitlists. Apply on the first day the portal opens.
