How to Apply for Florida's Program

Program: Family Empowerment Scholarship (FES-UA)

Deadline: Rolling enrollment; apply through Step Up For Students

Florida has two major scholarship programs. The Family Empowerment Scholarship for Educational Options (FES-UA) is now universal — any student can apply regardless of income. The Florida Tax Credit Scholarship (FTC) is income-based at 185% FPL. Both are administered by Step Up For Students, a nonprofit scholarship-granting organization. Benefit amounts vary by grade level and school cost — average is around $8,000/yr.

1

Confirm your school is approved

Private schools must be accredited and registered with the state program to accept voucher or ESA students. Contact the school directly or check the program's approved school list.

2

Gather documents

Typically: child's birth certificate, proof of state residency, income documentation (recent tax return or pay stubs), and current school enrollment records.

3

Apply before the window closes

Rolling enrollment; apply through Step Up For Students. Programs with fixed windows often have waitlists. Apply on the first day the portal opens.
